Julia asked for a small cabinet to display her and Megan's shot glass collection

There are many shapes, sizes, and storage capacities for shot glass racks. I went to Amazon and looked for the best selling racks to draw inspiration. After a few iterations Julia agreed to this design. I didn't have a thickness planer at the time and my old jointer was old, nicked and small so I had to rely on commonly available lumber sizes. Routing Out Dados
Routing Out Dados

George Vondriska, Managing Editor of Woodworkers Guild of America, is fond of saying it is better to be consistent than accurate. The best way to ensure even shelves is to cut both dados at the same time. I created a quick jig to make sure the dados are square and easily repeatable (11/29/2019)

The tops and bottoms of case have groves in the back, and the bottom is notched. (11/29/2019)

Here the frame is assembled using pocket screws and glue. (11/29/2019)

Fitting the Shelves
Fitting the Shelves

Here I'm fitting the shelves into the frame. There is a slight bow in the sides so the shelves are all slightly different lengths. There is a notch in each side of the shelves to hide the dados, (11/30/2019)

Base and Crown
Base and Crown

Here I'm gluing in the base and crown pieces. They not only add a bit of style, but they hide the pocket screws holding the case together. (11/30/2019)

Attaching the Shelves
Attaching the Shelves

The shelves are secured by glue and pin nails. (12/1/2019)

Oops
Oops

I didn't have the right angle on this pin. I was able to press it into the wood rather than trying to dig it out. It won't be visible given it's location and the finish. (12/1/2019)

Rack Assembled
Rack Assembled

The rack is fully assembled (except or the back) and ready for stain (I started staining when I realized I forgot to take a pre-finish picture). (12/1/2019)

Finish Finished
Finish Finished

The rack is finished with General Finishes black water based stain and water based polyurethane. (12/2/2019)

Drip Cleanup
Drip Cleanup

I've never been good at applying finish, particularly poly. The light spots below are blobs of poly that I didn't clean up before it set up (water based poly dries fast). I had to run a chisel over these areas to smooth them out to ensure the back lies flat across the back. (12/4/2019)

The rack is complete! (12/6/2019)

Keyhole Hanger

I added keyhole hangers on the back so the rack can be hung on the wall. (12/6/209)
