Justine quit her job and struck out on her own! She and her friend Morgan are renting salon space at Cosmo Salon Suites in Canton. She asked me to build a coffee bar table to go over her mini fridge in the salon.
- Sketchup Model
-
Description:
As per usual, I started out with a Sketchup. Also as per usual, it didn't get built exactly like the Sketchup, but that's ok. The diagram got me 95% of the way there. Here I added dimensions for Justine. I built the refrigerator with the detail of the real fridge more for my own entertainment. The lady on the phone is Helen. She comes in automatically when starting a new file and I left her in for scale. (12/2019)
- Acclimating the Lumber
-
Description:
I left the stack of lumber in the basement for a week or so to acclimate. Justine requested it be built out of pine, which I bought from Home Depot. I didn't purchase the lumber for the table top at this point. I couldn't find any 2x material that wasn't in bad shape or significantly warped. (12/7/2019)
- Need a Miter Saw Table
-
Description:
I have it in my head that I will build a miter saw table some day. I really could have used it for this project. I clamped a long board to miter saw and used a block with a spring clamp to ensure the boards with of consistent length. It worked, but I definitely need to build a proper table at some point. - Fitting the Shelves
-
Description:
Both sides of the bar have built in shelves for coffee mugs (on the visible side) and extra stock (on the side facing the wall). I built them symmetrically in case there is a need to pull them away from the wall or it gets moved to a different location. Here I'm putting in biscuits to support the shelf. If I had to do over again I would have put in adjustable shelves. (12/11/2019)
- Oops
-
Description:
Here I blew through a pocket hole. If you look really close to the right side you can see I just nicked the screw. Ultimately not a big deal since both sides of this slot will be hidden and there was no damage to the blade. (12/11/2019)
- Baseboard Fixed
-
Description:
The vertical board was set back as a nailer for the plywood panel on the back of the shelves, so I was able to fix the oversight by cutting out a notch to go over the vertical piece the thickness of the plywood. (12/11/2019)
- Bracing the Cabinet Front
-
Description:
It's about this point that I realized I started the assembly in the wrong order. I should have created the front and back frames and fit the shelves in between. Here I installed some temporary braces to hold the face frame steady while I glue and screw it in place. I ended up leaving the bottom one in place since there was really no reason to remove it. The back panel on the right is just resting in place at this point (12/18/2019)
- Colliding Screws
-
Description:
Oops. I had a pocket hole for the frame in the same location for a screw for the shelf. I drilled a new pocket hole next to it. I considered using mortise and tenon joinery for this project but decided against it because of the timeline and my lack of a router table (My old router died, the new router doesn't fit my old table).
