Coffee Bar

Justine quit her job and struck out on her own! She and her friend Morgan are renting salon space at Cosmo Salon Suites in Canton. She asked me to build a coffee bar table to go over her mini fridge in the salon.

Cabinet Complete
  • Cabinet Complete
  • Description:

Here the cabinet is complete. The long boards sticking up will connect to the shelves on the other side. (12/18/2019)

Ready to Complete Base
  • Ready to Complete Base
  • Description:

The base is almost ready. My work table (our former kitchen table) is not flat so I brought it to the floor for final assembly. (12/20/2019)

Blocks for Feet
  • Blocks for Feet
  • Description:

I forgot to account for the leveling feet, so I added blocks underneath. I should have gone back to the Sketchup and add them there. I ended up putting them in the way of a boards to support the drawer slides. I was able to work around them. I only glued the blocks to the front face to avoid cross-grain gluing issues. (12/20/2019)

Another Oops
  • Another Oops
  • Description:

I managed to miss squeeze-out under the shelves on one of the units. I normally wait for the glue to skin over and scrape it off with chisel, or in some cases wipe it with a wet rag. (12/21/2019)

Cleaned up
  • Cleaned up
  • Description:

I sharpened my beater chisel and cleaned out the glue. I had to do some extra sanding in these areas to make sure the stain absorbed evenly. (12/21/2019)

Need Spacer
  • Need Spacer
  • Description:

The original plan was to install overlay drawers. I haven't installed inset drawers before, but having watched a Woodworkers Guild video I reconsidered and decided inset would look better in this project. The problem was that means I have to move back the drawer slide so I needed to fill this gap so I can have something to which I can attach them. (12/21/2019)

Final Case Assembly
  • Final Case Assembly
  • Description:

I ended up moving the carcass back to the table for final assembly (I sure I had a reason to do so, but I can't remember why). It was a bit of a challenge since the boards didn't line up exactly right (again - should have assembled the face frame first), but I was able to cobble it together. (12/21/2019)

Stained Base
  • Stained Base
  • Description:

I used General Finishes black stain on the bar base. Its the same water-based stain I used on the family room mantel and Julia's shot glass rack. (12/22/2019)

Shelf Backs
  • Shelf Backs
  • Description:

I finished the shelf backs separately to minimize pooling of polyurethane in the back corners of the shelves. I ended up spending some quality time with my chisel cleaning up drips as it was. Cleaning up the drips with the back in place would have been a pain. I never have been very good with applying finish so I do what I can to make my life easier when I can. (12/22/2019)

Poly on the Base
  • Poly on the Base
  • Description:

Here the base has a single coat of polyurethane. I'll end up with three coats when all is said and done. (12/22/2019)

Gina's Inspection
  • Gina's Inspection
  • Description:

Gina inspects my progress as I start installing the drawer slides. (12/27/2019)

Adding Slide Supports
  • Adding Slide Supports
  • Description:

I had to add some supports for the drawer slides. This is when I realized the foot blocks I installed were in the way. I was able to work around them. The support on the front is narrow only because it was a cutoff from a different part. (12/27/2019)
