We ended up with lots of water in the house during a storm.

Tarp Tent
  • Tarp Tent
  • Description:

The builders put up a frame to hold up the tarp so water would run off to the sides. Unfortunately, the tarp ripped during a torrential storm overnight, leading to several leaks in the house. (8/2/04)

Plywood Ceiling
  • Plywood Ceiling
  • Description:

The ceiling over the bed in the master bedroom was saturated and spongy. In order to prevent the ceiling from caving in during the night, I screwed a sheet of plywood over the affected area. Water ended up dripping over the edges of the plywood. (8/3/04)

A Hole in the Ceiling
  • A Hole in the Ceiling
  • Description:

The builders accidentally put a hole in the ceiling while putting up the I-beams. In this case, it was fortuitous since it allowed the water to drain rather than collect in the ceiling, possibly causing a collapse. There was so much water pouring in that we brought a garbage can in from the garage to collect it. (8/3/04)

Water in the Basement
  • Water in the Basement
  • Description:

Water was pouring into Stephen's room through his light fixture. Unfortunately, we did not catch this leak until around 3:00 in the morning, so the carpet in Stephen's room was soaked, as was the hallway in front of his room (we didn't get any pictures of this - we just cleaned it up). The water soaked through the floor and onto the ceiling tile in the basement. (8/4/04)

Garage Ceiling Collapses
  • Garage Ceiling Collapses
  • Description:

We stored the little swimming pool for the winter by screwing the rim of the pool to the joists in the ceiling in the garage. Enough water collected in the pool to rip the screws out of the wood. The drywall subsequently collapsed leaving a big mess in the garage. (8/4/04)

Ceiling in Bedroom
  • Ceiling in Bedroom
  • Description:

The drywall in the master bedroom over the bed is still wet the following evening. (8/4/04)

Water On the Tarp
  • Water On the Tarp
  • Description:

Water collects on the top of the tarp later in the day. The builder had come by earlier in the day to get the water off the tarp, and came again at the end of the day to clear off what had collected during the day. (8/4/04)

Water Pump
  • Water Pump
  • Description:

This is a blurry picture of the water pump the builder used to get the water off the tarp. (8/4/04)

Convenient Destruction
  • Convenient Destruction
  • Description:

The damage in the garage ceiling helped the pluming and electrical installations. Since a big chunk fell, and a large portion of the rest of it was damaged, we could cut as many holes in it as needed to gain access to the various portions of the ceiling. (10/23/04)

Garage Mess
  • Garage Mess
  • Description:

With the collapse of the ceiling, everything in the garage got scattered. The mess only increased over time as I shifted stuff back and forth to accommodate the ladders necessary to work in the ceiling. (12/15/04)

Leak Plus Drywall
  • Leak Plus Drywall
  • Description:

The total destruction of any semblance of order came about after the drywall was installed. Take the original collapsed drywall, add the material from the roof tear-off that fell on top of the ceiling, and add drywall dust and globs of drywall compound that fell during finishing, and you end up with a mess that took days to clean up. (12/15/04)

Another View of The Mess
  • Another View of The Mess
  • Description:

The final stages of destruction and reconstruction of the garage resulted in piles of both materials and trash. (12/15/04)
